Haven't I celebrated this before?
Unfortunately, maybe. For a few years now, there have been several hoaxes floating around the Internet claiming "this is the year!" "this is the day!" But true fans (and anyone willing to do research) can tell you that those were Photoshopped.
Why are we celebrating October 21, 2015?
In Back to the Future, 17-year-old Marty McFly was accidentally sent back in time (30 years) from 1985 to 1955 in the DeLorean, which was a time machine built by scientist Doc Brown. However, at the end of the movie, Doc appears in a modified version of the DeLorean, and tells Marty that he must travel to the future to undo some situation caused by Marty's kids.
In Back to the Future II, we find out that the “future” that Doc spoke of was 2015! And October 21, 2015 was the day they traveled to - Dun, dun, dun.
If you had a hard time following that plot line, maybe it’s time for you to watch all three of these gems back to back to refresh your memory. They are kid-friendly movies, so the whole family can watch the story unfold.
However, if you’re just getting around to watching them now, the kids might be a tad bit disappointed that 2015 isn’t depicted in the movie as we now know it. For one thing, we certainly don't dress the way the characters are portrayed in the movie.
We’re missing out on a few major things like flying cars for everyday use AND I challenge you to find any kid who can tell you the status of the last Jaws movie, let alone find Jaws 19 (it doesn’t exist).
However, you might be surprised to know that we've achieved a few of the things shown in the movie. (I'm sure because of the popularity of the movie itself. I mean - marketing gold!) For example, Pepsi will be releasing 6,500 bottles of Pepsi Perfect online in the U.S. on October 21. Each collectible bottle will be sold for $20.15.
Both Lexus and Hendo have developed hoverboards JUST IN TIME for 2015, although neither are readily available to the public.
In 2011, Nike had a limited release of Marty McFly's 2015 shoes, called the Nike MAG. But the limited-release shoes were only similar in appearance and did not offer the awesome self-tying feature portrayed in the movie.
Proceeds from the sales of the 2011 Nike Mag shoes went to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease. Nike has stated their intent to re-release the Nike Mag with self-tying laces in 2015. Not much else has been discussed about the 2015 version, but they will probably also be available in limited release.
And, finally, what some people deem to be the most improbable thing to come true from this movie. The Cubs are in the playoffs, which means they have a shot at winning the 2015 World Series as Back to the Future II predicted. Of course, this one remains to be seen, but Chicago fans are optimistic.
One Last Mind-Blowing Thought:
Right now, as you are reading this in 2015, you are as far removed from 1985 as Marty McFly was from 1955. That’s right, it has been exactly 30 years since Marty McFly traveled into the past for the first time on the DeLorean in the original Back to the Future (and his destination, 1955, was 30 years from his starting point).
To quote Marty McFly, “Whoa, this is heavy.”
So, your reason to celebrate is that your generation is lucky to have been alive for both Marty's present-day starting point (1985) and Marty's future (2015). AND some folks reading this may have also been around for Marty's first visit back to the past (1955). Definitely worth celebrating!
